A new poll says 10 per cent of drivers in Saskatchewan admit to talking or texting on a cellphone while behind the wheel.

The nationwide CAA survey found five per cent of respondents in the province said they regularly texted or emailed while driving in the past month.

Fourteen per cent of those surveyed in Saskatchewan said they texted or emailed while behind the wheel or saw someone else doing it more than 10 times in the last 30 days. Another 21 per cent said they had done it or witnessed it six to 10 times in the same period, while 44 per cent said it happened one to five times.

Just under half of those surveyed in the province said they talk on a hands-free cellphone while driving.

The poll also found that texting or emailing while driving was a top road safety concern, with 90 per cent of Canadians saying it’s socially unacceptable.

“We still need to close that gap between belief and behaviour,” Jeff Walker, CAA’s vice-president of public affairs, said in a news release. “But we’re on the right track.”

The poll of 1,252 Canadians has a margin of error of 2.8 per cent 19 times out of 20.
