Dozens of past and present students and staff gathered at the University of Regina to mark the institution's 100th anniversary Friday.

The institution opened as a college in 1911 and the first buildings were erected at its current location in the 1960s. The U of R has nearly doubled in size since 1997.

"It began with 27 students and now we have our highest enrolment in our history," said U of R president Vianne Timmons.

She says enrolment rose nearly 11 per cent from last year to just under 13,000 students.

"You're going to see this place booming in the next 100 years," Timmons said.

More than 250 people were registered for the homecoming-style event at the academic green in the heart of the campus.
