Police needed to use a Taser to arrest a man after a physical struggle left an officer with serious injuries.

Officers were called to the 2000 block of Ottawa Street around 10 a.m. Thursday for a report of an injured man. According to police, there was a man lying near a garage and “moaning.” An officer took a hatchet from the man. Once other officers arrived, police say the man got up and ran away. He fought the officer who pursued him. He also tried to take the officer’s Taser and gun, police said in a news release.

Police say the exact circumstances of the incident are still under review, but another officer used his Taser on the man. The man sustained minor injuries. One of the officers suffered more serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Charges against the man are pending.
