Sask. sets record for new daily COVID-19 cases; hospitalizations surpass 200
The Saskatchewan government reported 449 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, marking the highest single-day tally since the start of the pandemic. The new case count breaks the record of 441 set on Nov. 21, 2020.
The province also said four more people have died due to COVID-19, bringing the total to 625. Three people were between the ages of 60 and 79 and one person was over the age of 80.
The new cases are in the Far Northwest (40), Far Northeast (19), Northwest (102), North Central (43), Northeast (38), Saskatoon (105), Central West (six), Central East (nine), Regina (13), Southwest (11), South Central (nine) and Southeast (11) zones. Forty-three new cases have pending residence information.
Eighty-nine per cent of the new cases are in residents who are not fully vaccinated.
Fifty per cent of the new cases are in the under 30 age group – 148 are age 19 and younger (142 of which are unvaccinated) and 75 are in the 20-29 age group (68 of which are unvaccinated).
The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients surpassed 200 for the first time since April. As of Monday, there are 209 COVID-19 patients in hospital across the province. Of the 209 patients, 162 (77.5 per cent) are not fully vaccinated. There are 41 patients in the ICU.
There are 3,776 active COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan, the highest count since Jan. 20, 2021. There seven-day average of daily new cases is 377, a number not seen before.
The province said health care workers administered 1,494 doses of COVID-19 vaccine since the last update, bringing the number of fully vaccinated people to 709,535.
