Rising floodwaters this year have deluged the Saskatchewan government with unexpected costs of about $140 million dollars.

The number includes an additional $34 million the government is giving the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority to cover costs related to unprecedented flooding.

Most of that money will go to a program designed to help municipalities and individuals build flood protection measures.

The province says the program has helped more than 1,100 clients -- far higher than the 650 originally anticipated.

The $140 million includes $66 million already announced to repair provincial highways damaged by flooding and $40 million for the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program.

Ottawa has agreed to pay most of the cost of the disaster assistance program and the provincial hopes to get more money to cover other expenses.
