A city committee has denied a request for a property tax break from the Royal Regina Golf Club.

The semi-private club was seeking a reduction of the mill rate for golf courses from 65 per cent to 30 per cent of the commercial rate.

Royal Regina Golf Club general manager Archie Cameron said the $23,000 tax reduction would put the club on a level playing field with city-owned golf courses.

Nearly half of the course is situated on a flood plain, and the club has spent nearly $1 million on mitigation efforts since 2011. Last Year, city council approved a one-year tax exemption for the Royal Regina.

Cameron said if the club doesn’t get another tax break this year, membership prices could rise by as much as $300.

However, the city finance and administration committee denied the request at a meeting Tuesday.

City council is expected to consider the request at its next meeting April 14.
