The City of Regina is looking at a possible ban on smoking and vaping in public places.

The mayor and four veteran city councilors submitted a joint motion at Monday night’s council meeting to begin researching and gathering feedback on banning smoking and vaping in places such as patios, public parks, and outdoor sports facilities.

The motion passed unanimously.

The sudden move to implement a ban is a turnaround for the city. Up until recently, council’s position has been that the provincial government should take the lead on health issues, but Mayor Fougere says the province has consistently refused to act, so city hall will now go it alone.

Administration is expected to report back on a possible smoking-vaping ban by April.

A similar by-law is already in place in Saskatoon.
