An apartment building in south Regina was evacuated after a fire broke out in one of the suites Thursday morning.

Crews were called to the building in the 4000 block of Robinson Street just before 10:30 a.m.

Several people were evacuated from the building, including Desarae Bolingbroke, who lives next to the suite where the fire started.

“Everyone was told to get out as soon as possible – no shoes, no jackets,” she said.

Bolingbroke said her brother was taken to hospital after he suffered a cut to his hand.

“He tried to grab as many fire extinguishers as he could to get in and to put it out and he cut his hand really bad, so he’s getting stitches.”

Assistant fire chief David Kinvig says the fire was contained to the suite where it broke out.

“We had (the fire) under control real quick,” Kinvig said. “It didn’t spread to any other areas in the apartment block.”

No one was in the suite at the time and no other injuries were reported.

The fire caused extensive damage to the suite and smoke damage elsewhere in the building. A dollar estimate was not available.

It wasn't known when residents will be allowed to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
