The Crown is seeking a 10-year sentence for a Regina man convicted in the death of a toddler.
Jason Will was found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month in the death of 18-month-old Raime Myers.
The little boy stopped breathing while under the care of Will in July 2009. During the trial, Will denied smothering the child, but admitted to putting his hand over the crying boy's mouth.
At a sentencing hearing Wednesday, court heard victim impact statements from the boy’s relatives. They said the death has taken an emotional toll on the family, particularly on the child’s mother and six-year-old sister.
Will stared straight forward, showing no emotion, as the statements were read. He later told the court he still has nightmares about the toddler’s death, saying it “tears me up every single day.”
The defence is asking for a sentence of four to six years. Justice Dennis Ball has reserved his decision until Thursday.
