A build-up of snow and ice is being blamed after a car got stuck on a railway crossing in Regina – just as a train was approaching.

It happened around 2:30 Saturday morning. A man was driving his girlfriend home, when he tried to cross the railway tracks in the two thousand block of Campbell Street.

The car got hung-up on the snow and ice ruts. As they worked to try and get the vehicle free, a westbound train arrived. The driver and passenger managed to escape, but the train struck the car causing extensive damage.

There were no injuries reported, and the train did not derail.
