RCMP in Estevan say a Toronto man has been charged after a pipe bomb was allegedly found in his vehicle at a border crossing in Saskatchewan.
Border agents alerted police after they found a suspected explosive device in the man’s vehicle while he was attempting to enter Canada through Saskatchewan’s North Portal crossing Sunday afternoon.
An RCMP explosive disposal unit safely detonated the device, and confirmed that it was a pipe bomb.
A 21-year-old Toronto man was arrested and charged with possession of an explosive device.
Derek Joseph Formosa was scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday morning in Weyburn.
Authorities do not believe the incident is related to any terrorist or organized crime group.
The incident forced the evacuation of the building where the suspect’s vehicle was searched. Northbound traffic through North Portal was disrupted for about 15 minutes while the device was detonated.
