Screams, laughter and the smell of deep-fried food filled the air as the Queen City Ex officially got underway Wednesday.

More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the annual fair at Regina’s Evraz Place.

Several new food items are on offer this year, including a metre-long hotdog, cookies n’ cream mini donuts and pterodactyl wings.

The five-day fair also features live music and rides for visitors of all ages. All rides are inspected before opening to the public.

Concern around amusement ride safety has heightened recently after one person died and several others were injured on a ride at a fair in Ohio last week.

The ride has been pulled from the Saskatoon and Regina exhibitions by North American Midway Entertainment until the cause of the accident is determined.

Tuesday night’s Queen City Ex parade included dozens of floats, and was followed by a fireworks display in Wascana Park.
