Two Regina men are facing charges after police say one of their cruisers was intentionally rammed by a pickup truck during a vehicle stop.

Just after midnight Sunday, police attempted to stop a pickup truck after receiving information that the occupants had intimidated a pedestrian during a verbal altercation.

The truck took off down Eighth Avenue toward Elphinstone Street and a police officer tried to stop the vehicle by activating the cruiser's emergency lights.

Police say before the officer was able to exit the cruiser, the truck backed up intentionally and slammed into the police vehicle, setting off its airbags.

The impact caused an injury to the officer’s wrist.

The truck then headed north on Elphinstone Street at a high rate of speed, breaking through construction signs, striking barriers and a light standard.

Both occupants of the truck fled on foot and were apprehended a short distance away.

Ashton Lavallee-Raphael, 25, and Ronald Zerr, 27, both from Regina, have each been charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Lavallee-Raphael is also charged with dangerous driving and impaired driving.

Both men were scheduled to make their first court appearance Monday morning.
