Nearly 200 people were evacuated after a dumpster fire spread to a hotel in downtown Regina.

Fire crews were called to the Quality Hotel near the corner of Victoria Avenue and Broad Street on Sunday morning.

When firefighters arrived, the flames had spread to a wooden structure housing the dumpster, as well as a nearby grease bin and pallets.

“This all resulted in a very large fire that reached as high as the fourth-floor windows,” said deputy fire chief Gerard Kay.

“It breached through a window adjacent to the dumpster itself and got into a conference room, where at that point, the sprinkler system inside the hotel kicked in and contained the fire.”

Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and the 197 people who had been evacuated from the hotel were allowed back into the building.

No one was injured and damage is estimated at $500,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
