The Trans-Canada Highway from Regina to Moose Jaw has reopened after a winter storm prompted its closure Wednesday afternoon.
RCMP responded to a pileup involving at least six vehicles, including an ambulance and a tow truck, on Highway 1 between Belle Plaine and Pense.
Several people were taken to hospital in Regina with non-life threatening injuries.
Eastbound traffic was backed up for nearly five kilometres before one of the lanes was reopened.
There were also numerous reports of vehicles that had slid into the ditch along the highway and the Ring Road in Regina. Police said six collisions had been reported in the city as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, two of which involved minor injuries.
Mounties said reduced visibility and blowing snow were factors in a collision between a pickup truck and a semi-tanker on Highway 16 near Maidstone. No one was injured and none of the diesel fuel in the tanker spilled.
Winter snow warnings were issued for several communities, including Regina and Saskatoon, after a low pressure system moved in from Alberta.
Environment Canada said 10 to 15 centimetres of snowfall was expected in some parts of southern Saskatchewan.
