The RCMP are closing forensic laboratories in Regina, Winnipeg and Halifax.
The force's six labs will be consolidated into three based in Vancouver, Edmonton and Ottawa, for an estimated savings of $3.5 million a year.
Mounties say the move will also "improve efficiency, eliminate redundancy and reduce infrastructure costs such as building maintenance, without compromising core services."
The RCMP will continue to offer laboratory services in biology, toxicology, trace evidence, national anti-counterfeiting and firearms and toolmark Identification.
The decision to consolidate the labs was based on several studies, some of which indicated that the current six-site model was inefficient.
There's no word on when the three labs will close their doors.
