Two people died and another was taken to hospital after a head-on collision on a highway in west-central Saskatchewan.

RCMP say the two-vehicle crash happened on Highway 44, about 30 kilometres west of Elrose, on Sunday night.

The collision claimed the lives of a 32-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man, both from the Elrose area. Their names have not been released.

Fire crews had to use the Jaws of Life to free the 23-year-old female driver of the other car from her vehicle. She was taken to hospital in Saskatoon with undisclosed injuries.

Police say road conditions were good at the time of the crash.
